Q: I am part of a sales team and use my computer all day. I had glasses before I went to the company, but feel my eyesight has deteriorated since. Does my employer have to pay for an eye test and can I charge them for any treatment?

Under the health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992, an employer has a duty to provide employees using display screen equipment for more than one hour a day with an eye examination to be carried out by a qualified professional and to be paid for by the employer. So I suggest that you ask your manager if there is a company procedure in place that you can follow. Otherwise you can suggest that your manager checks out the company’s obligations. You may find this leaflet useful as it answers lots of FAQ’s on the subject of computer screen usage - click here. Note that you are also entitled to VDU breaks to ease or prevent any discomfort.
