Next-generation broadband 'hugely important'

Jul 23 2008

Having next-generation broadband is 'hugely important' for UK businesses if they want to stay ahead of the competition, a consumer advice company says.

Michael Phillips, product director of the firm, believes that the distribution of optic-fibre broadband nationwide is 'absolutely key' to the economic and social development of the country.

He comments: 'It will facilitate things like homeworking and remote conferencing … at the moment, whilst they are possible, are invariably quite hard work.'

The installation of such a service in Britain would also enable people from the creative industries, like those producing video or other large files, to move content from one location to another more easily, Phillips, from ISP comparison site BroadbandChoices.co.uk, claims.

High-speed optic fibre broadband is already being used by nearly 29 million subscribers worldwide, according to research company Ovum.

BT has recently announced its intention to invest in such a network in the UK, proposing plans which would see ten million homes and businesses connected to the service by 2012.
