Q: What length of break are employees entitled to for an eight hour shift in a restaurant?

Employees are entitled to a 20 minute break in a six hour period. The break must take place during the six hours and not at the beginning or end of it. You don’t have to pay them for that break as long as you have made that condition clear in the statement of terms of employment (and it is signed by the employee).

However, there are special rules applying to young and vulnerable workers, night workers and so forth so it would be advisable to check the ACAS website for specific information. Click here.
