Internet campaigns 'raise profiles on a low budget'

Organisations and charities can use the internet to raise their own profiles, according to a publisher.

According to Henry Palmer, director of Society Media, 'the internet is a very important area' for organisations 'across all sectors' who want to increase awareness of their brand but do not have a lot of money to spend on expensive advertising campaigns.

The best kind of campaign is one where those distributing an advertisement - for example though emailing a video clip to their friend - do not realise they are doing so, he comments.

'People often talk about the viral stuff; it often appears accidental, that's the beauty of them, they appear to be accidental successes,' Palmer comments, giving the example of the Friends of The Earth's Big Ask campaign as effective because 'it circulated everywhere'.

In 2007, some 61 per cent of households in the UK had internet access, an increase of seven per cent on 2006, the National Statistics Omnibus Survey revealed.
