Fashion and clothing has the best potential for growth for online businesses, an e-commerce industry body claims.

David Smith, director of operations for the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), says that retailers have realised they have the opportunity to replicate the success of catalogues through selling online.

He comments that, until recently, sellers have assumed that shoppers would want to touch and feel items.

Smith advises: 'I still think a huge amount is to be said for clothing and the whole kind of fashion brand area.

'There is still a lot of room in the fashion and clothing sector.'

Research from the IMRG and Capgemini has shown that spending online in May rose to more than £4.5 billion in May - an increase of 1.6 per cent on the previous month.

Spending online equated to around £731 for each resident of the UK during the month - an increase of 30 per cent compared to the same period in 2007.
