Small firms need good PR

Many small businesses are missing out on valuable publicity by not sending out news releases that could gain them significant numbers of new customers and enhance their reputation locally, nationally or even globally.

Public relations agency The Buzz Factory conducted a recent survey that showed more than four in ten businesses have never released a press release of any description about their business, product or service.

The Buzz Factory believes that many are missing out by hiding their light under a bushel, pointing out that winning coverage in a local or even national publication can reap spectacular rewards. It has launched a competition to find the UK’s most publicity shy business (whilst drumming up some valuable publicity for itself).

Entrants must list recent, interesting achievements they feel were deserving of media coverage. Fortunately, chronically shy businesses can be nominated by someone else.

Eight regional prize-winners and three monthly winners will each receive a free Buzz Factory brainstorm worth £100 to generate new ideas for media coverage. The first prize, winning £500-worth of PR support, will be announced in January 2007.

‘You can nominate your own business,’ explains The Buzz Factory managing director Richard Glynn. ‘But we’ll also allow people to nominate businesses that they may not work for – providing the business concerned subsequently approves. We hope the competition will encourage more businesses to unearth quality news about their organisation – no matter what product or service they provide.’
