Several major UK banks have announced plans to open more local branches, a move welcomed by the Forum of Private Business (FPB) as a boost for small businesses.

The last few years have seen large numbers of high street branches closed in many towns, but the announcement by Abbey, Halifax and HSBC that they are investing in opening at least 50 new branches each, could begin to reverse the trend.

‘This is great news for the small business owner,’ Andy Mowlah, banking expert at the FPB. ‘However, we must wait to see if the banks increase the amount of local branches after years of sustained closure.’

According to the FPB’s banking survey, business owners rate friendly staff, convenient location and consistently dealing with the same person as some of the most important aspects of dealing with their bank.
