The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a series of documentaries highlighting health and safety issues, reinforcing new employer guidelines issued earlier this year by the Health and Safety Commission

The documentaries, called Worksmart, aim to highlight dangers in the workplace and offer practical solutions.

The focus is real people discussing genuine experiences in the workplace that resulted in loss of life, injury or ill health. Each 45-second programme deals with a separate issue and offers a solution based upon personal experience.

Stories are grouped together by work activities that carry the highest rates of problems such as stress and musculoskeletal disorders, across industries including construction and agriculture.

Penalties for breaching health and safety law are severe, and can range from fines of £5,000 to an unlimited amount, imprisonment and the disqualification of directors.

The programmes have been screened in the north-west, south, south-east and north-east of England. Research in the north-west following this shows a huge increase in the awareness of health and safety issues among workers in that region.

The Worksmart video and DVD costs £25 and can be ordered online at http://www.hsebooks.co.uk or are available from HSE Books, PO Box 1999, Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 2WA, tel: 01787-881 165.
