A guide to Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax

What MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment means for your
business—and how to prepare.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is the UK
government’s flagship program
to make tax accounting easier for
businesses and individuals.
As you might guess from the
name, it does this by legislating
the digitalization of tax data and
submissions.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment
will begin in April 2026

The scheme will be introduced in two stages: businesses,
self-employed individuals, and landlords with income over £50,000 will be mandated to join first, followed by those with income over £30,000 in April 2027.
The government will review the needs of smaller businesses, particularly those under the £30,000 threshold, and consult with stakeholders before deciding on any further mandation of MTD for ITSA.
