Taking the plunge and starting your own business

Taking the plunge and starting your own business is a big step to take and the pressure of keeping yourself afloat can weigh heavily on a small business owner.

With that in mind, we wanted to see how many of you that are already up and running felt you made the right move. In our poll we asked if, given a second chance, you would still start your business.

We had a great response and found that most SmallBusiness.co.uk readers are very positive about running a company. An overwhelming 82 per cent of you say that if you could go back, you would go it alone and become your own boss all over again.

Of that number, 29 per cent are extremely positive indeed, saying that it was the best move you’d ever made and, despite your various ups and downs, a quarter of you feel that it was worth the struggle.

Starting a business is often as much about making mistakes and learning from them as it is about the successes, and a number of you feel that there are things that you’d do differently if you were to do it all again. Sometimes you just have to draw a line under bad times and put it down to experience as you come out the other side.

Yet, the fact that so many see starting a small business as a positive step should come as welcome news for readers who haven’t quite got there yet. In fact, only 15 per cent of you say that you wouldn’t start up again.

In other news, we have a new section of articles on starting a Small Business in the UK. This should make the site easier to find guides and tips to help you in your new venture. It will also feature promotions from companies that want work with and support SMEs.
