Law service sympathises with businesses over compensation

Avatar photoby Small Business Team18 July 2008

Businesses 'don't stand a chance' against compensation claims unless they 'wrap their employees up in cotton wool', a legal service says.

No win no fee and the credit crunch mean that companies need to be especially careful in order to avoid being sued, remarks Stephen Leigh, an advisor at lawyer-search service Real Compensation.

He explains that now anyone who wants to is able to launch a claim, people suffering in the current economic climate will be more likely to attempt to gain compensation.

According to Leigh, people are suing over increasingly minor incidents: ‘If it was a major thing then fair enough but claims are happening for just ridiculous, small things that an employee could not envisage happening.’

Statistically, he comments, accidents will happen as it is just ‘a numbers game’.

In May 2008, a station florist reportedly lost his appeal against a ruling calling him negligent after a commuter slipped on one of his petals.
