Small business owners can evaluate their own performance and identify areas of weakness in a matter of minutes with a free online diagnostic “toolbox” from Business Link for Essex.

The toolbox takes the form of a questionnaire asking small business owners and managers to rate themselves on a scale of Poor, Good, OK and Excellent in 5 key areas: Strategic Direction; Marketing Strategy; People Management; Business Management and Financial Planning.

Participants rate themselves on subjects such as clarity of direction, productivity, cashflow management and staff motivation. The answers produce a percentage rating of overall management performance and highlight areas that may require improvement.

Having identified any areas in which there is room for improvement, Business Link then suggests actions to take to address them and offers advice on how to go about it, as well as providing links to further sources of help and advice.

Pat Smith, chief executive at Business Link for Essex says, “Self-assessment is an important part of the development of any business. The Business toolbox aims to provide an easy to use, quick process through which managers can identify strengths and weaknesses in their business. Business Link is on hand to offer assistance in areas where managers find they need help to improve.”

The toolbox can be accessed by clicking here.
